Gender self identifying plans to be dropped

Trans rights: government reported to be dropping gender self-identifying plans

Boris Johnson is set to scrap plans to allow people to change their legal gender by “self-identifying” as male or female, it has been reported.

Measures drawn up under Theresa May’s government to enable transgender people to change their birth certificate without a medical diagnosis have been ditched by the prime minister’s team, according to the Sunday Times.

Instead, the paper said ministers plan to announce a ban on “gay cure” therapies, in what was described as an attempt to placate LGBTQ+ people.

At the same time, the government was said to be preparing to set out new safeguards to protect female-only spaces including refuges and public lavatories.

Trump Rules Encourage Health Care Providers To Deny Care to Transgender People

By: NCTE

FacebookTwitterEmail

While the country is struggling with a deadly pandemic that has had a disastrous impact on marginalized communities and having an important conversation around race and police brutality, the Trump administration has released a final rule that would encourage health care providers to deny medical care – including COVID-19 tests – to LGBTQ people.

Trump Rules Encourage Health Care Providers To Deny Care to Transgender People | National Center for Transgender Equality

“Even as the death toll and catastrophe of the COVID-19 pandemic grows and people take to the streets, the Trump administration remains focused on denying equal access to health care to transgender people,” said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. “The Trump administration has waged a non-stop campaign against transgender people, taking every opportunity to deny us the ability to live our lives as who we are. The new rules released today are hateful and cruel, and will keep people from being able to get the care they need to live happy, healthy and productive lives.”

Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, also referred to as the Health Care Rights Law, prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color national origin, sex, age or disability in health care programs or activities. It is the first federal civil rights law to prohibit discrimination based on sex in health care.

While the Health Care Rights Law remains on the books, the Trump administration’s new rule eliminates clear rules prohibiting discrimination. With the new rules erasing explicit nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ people, health care providers are being sent the message that they can deny care to LGBTQ people.

NCTE is calling upon health care providers, hospitals, health insurance companies, medical professionals and Congress to reject this hateful rule. Issue Area: Health & HIV, Non-Discrimination Laws

JK Rowling

Why is JK Rowling speaking out now on sex and gender debate? | Books | The Guardian – comments please

Those supportive of transgender law reform – which has also been put on hold by the UK government – argue that anxiety around single sex-spaces relates to women’s understandable lack of faith in how seriously violence against them is dealt with. Organisations such as Rape Crisis Scotland and Women’s Aid Scotland have operated trans-inclusive policies with few reported problems. Transgender groups point out that they still make up only 0.6% of the population and that “the amount of obsession over where we pee is disproportionate to the likelihood of bumping into one of us”.

Gene Link

October 2008 Australian researchers have identified a significant link between a gene involved in testosterone action and male-to-female transsexualism – Terry Reed from the Gender Identity Research and Education Society said she was convinced of a biological basis to transsexualism. This study appears to reinforce earlier studies which have indicated that, in some trans people, there may be a genetic trigger to the development of atypical gender identity'(see research link below).

2004 legislation which has lay buried

“a man who intends to have no surgery and take no hormones may now secure himself a gender recognition certificate and be a woman in the sight of the law”. But this has been the case since initial gender recognition legislation was passed in 2004, under which the only legal requirement for changing a birth certificate is proof of living in one’s preferred gender”.

Trans LEGAL RIGHTS

The history of transgender rights in the UK | AllAboutLaw

Since 2000, the legal rights of trans people have begun to be entrenched more seriously in UK law. Since Caitlin Jenner came out as a woman in April 2015, an even brighter media spotlight has been placed on the trans community, particularly on trans women, and celebrity activists such as Laverne Cox and Munroe Bergdorf have worked to promote the cause and link it to wider struggles for equality happening in the UK, the US and across the world.

Thailand gets tough

November 1st, 2009 New regulations by the Medical Council of Thailand. The council moved recently to strictly control sex-change operations and require that transgender people consult a gender specialist, psychologist, or psychiatrist, live as a female for a year and have received hormone therapy before such an operation is permitted. The new regulations require that surgeons undertaking the sex change be registered with the Medical Council. They must also treat any complications that occur following surgery. Surgeons who violate the new regulations face warnings or the threat of having their medical license revoked.
